PROJECT SUMMARY

After a decade of planning by staff members and years of exhaustive exploratory work by Stone & Lime, the Front Bay of Portland’s historic Victoria Mansion was painstakingly restored. Stone & Lime was responsible for restoring the brownstone facade, completing the front of the mansion for the first time in 75 years. Innovative approaches included incorporating 3-D scanning and printing to model building ornaments that had disappeared after years of exposure. The facade was reborn using one of the last known stockpiles of original Portland Brownstone, which is no longer quarried. The stone was carved by hand in a year-long process to replicate the historic exterior.

HISTORIC CONTEXT

Also known as the Morse-Libby House, Victoria Mansion began as a private residence before opening to the public as a museum in 1941. Today, the Mansion serves the Greater Portland community, inspiring loyalty and affection as a center for history, exploration, and wonder. The mission of Victoria Mansion is to conserve, maintain, and restore the Victoria Mansion property and collections to the highest standards and to interpret them in their social and historical context to a broad local, state, and national audience.
