PROJECT SUMMARY
St. George’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Springfield, MA, is a treasured architectural landmark known for its striking Gothic Revival design and rich history. Originally built in 1869 as Memorial Church, it was designed by the renowned father-son duo Richard Upjohn and Richard M. Upjohn, celebrated for their mastery of Gothic architecture. Constructed with Monson granite and brownstone trim, the church became a cornerstone of Springfield’s architectural heritage.
Stone & Lime Historic Restoration Services undertook a meticulous restoration to preserve the cathedral for future generations. The project included masonry revitalization, veneer reconstruction, brownstone and granite replacement, and precision cleaning and repointing. Structural repairs addressed lightning damage to the roof and tower, while wood louvers were carefully restored and repainted. Environmental cleaning and elevation repairs further strengthened the building’s long-term stability and appearance.
Today, St. George’s remains a vibrant cultural and spiritual hub and a testament to 19th-century craftsmanship. Through careful restoration, the cathedral’s beauty and historical significance are preserved, ensuring it continues to inspire generations to come.
