PROJECT SUMMARY

The First Baptist Church was designed by architect Henry Hobson Richardson and constructed in 1871. Stone & Lime Historic Restoration Services was contracted to assist in the stabilization of the very delicate friezes, carved “insitu” by sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi (sculptor of the Statue of Liberty) at this historic church. The work required careful cutting and repointing of the mortar joints in between the delicate carvings; stone patching and stabilization; and the installation of lead T’s to prevent further damage to the sandstone carvings.
